Start with the existing surface
Previously painted wood, solid stain, semi-transparent stain, and bare weathered wood do not offer the same options. Some changes require extensive removal or a compatible transition system.
Decide how much wood character to show
Opaque finishes create a uniform color, while more transparent stains allow additional grain variation to remain visible. Product categories vary, so review actual samples and technical data.
Preparation controls performance
Wood should be sound, clean, and dry enough for the selected product. Peeling coating, gray fibers, mildew-like contamination, and failed boards need appropriate attention before finishing.
Plan for exposure and maintenance
Horizontal deck surfaces receive foot traffic and hold moisture differently from vertical fence boards. Sun, shade, vegetation, drainage, and snow can create different maintenance patterns.
